Conference Description

The Gordon Research Conference on Fertilization and Activation of Development began in 1974, and has met every other year since 1977. This Gordon Research Conference brings together scientists addressing one of the most transformative moments in cell and developmental biology - the merger of sperm and egg for the creation of a totipotent cell, namely the zygote. At its core, this Gordon Research Conference is about the molecular and cell biology of the gametes. The topics that are discussed include biological factors and phenomena that render the gametes "fertilization-competent", the effects of the male and female reproductive tract environments on the gametes, variables (such as age and environmental exposures) that can affect the gametes, the central events of fertilization itself, and progression into early embryonic development. Consideration is given both to the basic science as well as translational implications for reproductive health. This conference also addresses fundamental components of gamete biology that extend more broadly and inform us about fundamental biological processes, including cell signaling, cell cycle regulation, regulation of gene expression, cellular interactions and membrane fusion, and many others.

What is a GRC? Gordon Research Conferences (GRC) are 5-day meetings that bring scientists together from around the world to present and discuss unpublished research with other leaders in their field.

Related Conference

This Gordon Research Conference (GRC) series is related to the "Fertilization & Activation of Development" Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) series. Although a related GRS will typically be scheduled in conjunction with its parent GRC each time it meets, that may not always be the case. Refer to the individual meetings in the Meeting History section below for more details. For more information about the associated Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) series, click here.

What is a GRS? Gordon Research Seminars (GRS) are 2-day meetings that bring graduate students and post-docs together to discuss their cutting edge research among peers and mentors. Each GRS immediately precedes an associated Gordon Research Conference (GRC), and topics addressed at the GRS relate closely to the GRC.
