Conference Description

This is a multi-disciplinary conference that has been held biennially since 1954. It explores the frontiers of science in isotope research between chemistry and biology, with links to physics and other areas of the natural and applied sciences. The goal is the exchange of novel concepts and ideas among these scientific areas in order to stimulate future research. The sessions and talks are arranged so that participants from different research areas are introduced to the strongly developing field of the use of isotopes, from physical chemistry to biochemistry, with a recurrent emphasis on hydrogen transfer and hydrogen bonding. Special efforts are made to promote discussion between scientists in different research areas.

Topics change from year to year depending on progress in the science and on the interests of the program organizers. Topics for recent sessions have included: Chemical Reactions with Exotic Nuclei; Computational Chemistry and Isotope Effects; Enzyme-Catalyzed Reactions and Enzymatic Mechanisms Probed by Isotope Effects; Equilibrium Isotope Effects; Gas-Phase, Atmospheric, and Extraterrestrial Chemistry; Hydrogen Bonding and Solvent Isotope Effects; Hydrogen Tunneling ; Isotope Effects in Chemical Dynamics; Isotope Effects in Electron-Transfer Complexes; Isotope Effects in Inorganic and Organometallic Chemistry; Isotope Effects in Organic Reactions; Isotope Effects on Hydrogen Bond Structure and Dynamics; Isotopes in Polymers and Biopolymers; Isotopic Anthropology; Kinetic Isotope Effects in Elucidation of Organic Reaction Mechanisms; Methods in Isotopic Fractionation; Protein Folding and Dynamics.; Stereochemical Isotope Effects; Theoretical Approaches to the Interpretation of Isotope Effects; Theory for Isotope Effects; Theory of Hydrogen Transfer In Condensed Phases; Transition States in Atom-Transfer Reactions; and Use of Isotopes in Analysis.

What is a GRC? Gordon Research Conferences (GRC) are 5-day meetings that bring scientists together from around the world to present and discuss unpublished research with other leaders in their field.

Related Conference

This Gordon Research Conference (GRC) series was related to the "Isotopes in Biological & Chemical Sciences" Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) series. Although a related GRS will typically be scheduled in conjunction with its parent GRC each time it meets, that may not always be the case. Refer to the individual meetings in the Meeting History section below for more details. For more information about the associated Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) series, click here.

What is a GRS? Gordon Research Seminars (GRS) are 2-day meetings that bring graduate students and post-docs together to discuss their cutting edge research among peers and mentors. Each GRS immediately precedes an associated Gordon Research Conference (GRC), and topics addressed at the GRS relate closely to the GRC.
