Conference Description

The Natural Products Gordon Research Conference has a rich tradition of excellence in a broad range of topics related to the chemistry of Natural Products, including the total synthesis of natural products isolation and characterization, novel synthetic organic chemistry methods, and areas related to bioorganic and medicinal chemistry. The first Natural Products GRC was held in 1951 through the organizational efforts of Dr. Thomas Gallagher of Sloan-Kettering, Professor Robert Woodward of Harvard and Professor Gilbert Stork of Columbia University. The conference was first named the Gordon Research Conference on "Steroids", and subsequently went by the name "Steroids and Related Natural Products", which was then changed to "Steroids and Other Natural Products", followed by "The Chemistry of Natural Products" in 1970. Finally, in 1971, the name "Natural Products" Gordon Research Conference was adopted and has been used ever since. The names changes that the NPGRC has seen reflect a growing diversification of the topics covered by the conference. Beginning with a narrow focus on the steroid class of natural products, the conference has grown to embrace topics related not only to a wide range of natural products, but also non-naturally occurring biologically and medicinally interesting substances and their mode of action. A fundamental aspect of the conference that has remained constant throughout its 56 years has been excellence in synthetic organic chemistry, as this conference has always drawn many of the top scientists in a wide range of organic chemistry.

The conference was first attended in 1951 by 32 individuals at the New Hampton School in New Hampshire. In recent years, the conference has been held at the Tilton School in Tilton, New Hampshire and has been attended by at least 135-150 people, the maximum allowed by the GRC. The attendees reflect not only the diverse topics embraced by the conference itself, but also a broad age and geographic range showing the international character of the conference. Recently, an increasing emphasis has been placed on the participation of graduate and post-doctoral students to further diversify the roughly 50-50 split between academic and industrial attendees. A hallmark of the NPGRC has been the stimulating poster sessions held 3 of the conference days, which typically draw a sizable percentage of conferee participation. These sessions have greatly enhanced the already strong scientific and social interactions that have always been a part of the Natural Products GRC.

What is a GRC? Gordon Research Conferences (GRC) are 5-day meetings that bring scientists together from around the world to present and discuss unpublished research with other leaders in their field.

Related Conference

This Gordon Research Conference (GRC) series is related to the "Natural Products & Bioactive Compounds" Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) series. Although a related GRS will typically be scheduled in conjunction with its parent GRC each time it meets, that may not always be the case. Refer to the individual meetings in the Meeting History section below for more details. For more information about the associated Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) series, click here.

What is a GRS? Gordon Research Seminars (GRS) are 2-day meetings that bring graduate students and post-docs together to discuss their cutting edge research among peers and mentors. Each GRS immediately precedes an associated Gordon Research Conference (GRC), and topics addressed at the GRS relate closely to the GRC.
