Conference Description

The first Temperature Stress in Plants conference was held in 1984 and was organized and chaired by Dr. Michael Burke. It began as a summer conference at the Tilton School in New Hampshire. Some of the topics of the first conference included membrane transitions, heat shock and other stress proteins, anhydrous systems, temperature dependent photosynthesis and ecology, ice nucleation and INA bacteria, and the freezing process in plants. Following the 1984 conference, Temperature Stress in Plants would become a winter conference based in southern California which would continue to the present time. The second conference, chaired by Steve Wallner, was held in Santa Barbara in 1985, and the conference has been held in odd numbered years since that time. Many of the important advances in the field during past 22 years have been presented at the Temperature Stress in Plants conferences. Notably, the application of molecular and “omics” approaches, understanding the role of gene regulation in stress responses, the cloning and characterization of major transcription factors in stress responses, understanding the function of stress proteins, identification of plant ice modifying proteins and characterization of the basis for bacterial mediated ice nucleation. The conference continues to address issues in basic science as well as in crop improvement. Since its inception, the Temperature Stress in Plants GRC has promoted scientific interchange between the leading researchers from academia, agriculture, and industry in the US and abroad, and has been vital in helping to advance the field.

What is a GRC? Gordon Research Conferences (GRC) are 5-day meetings that bring scientists together from around the world to present and discuss unpublished research with other leaders in their field.
