Tony F. Chan
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

Term: 2016 - Present

Tony Chan is the President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Prof Chan received his BS and MS from Caltech and PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University (1978). He taught at Yale before joining UCLA as Professor of Mathematics in 1986. At UCLA, he served as Mathematics Department Chair (1997-2000), Director of the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (2000-2001) and Dean of Physical Science (2001-2006). From 2006-2009, he served as Assistant Director of the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Directorate at the US National Science Foundation and managed research funding of over US$1B a year in astronomy, physics, chemistry, mathematical sciences and material science.

He is an elected Fellow of the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He served on the US National Committee for Mathematics and was one of five US representatives to the International Union of Mathematicians in 2006. He is one of ISI’s most cited mathematicians.

Kathryn Song Eng Cheah
The University of Hong Kong

Term: 2016 - Present

Kathryn S.E. Cheah, PhD, is Chair of Biochemistry at the University of Hong Kong since 1997 and Head of Department from 1997 to 2009. She was the Director for the LKS Faculty of Medicine Centre for Reproduction, Development and Growth from 2004 to 2009. Her university education was obtained in the UK, at University of London, and the University of Cambridge, where she was also a Brooks Scholar. She was a postdoctoral fellow in the University of Manchester and a Research Fellow at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in London before joining the University of Hong Kong in 1983. Kathy Cheah has been an Honorary Professor, Peking Union Medical College, Beijing, China since 1997. In 2000 she was awarded the University of Hong Kong's Outstanding Researcher Award and also the Croucher Foundation Senior Fellowship.

Dr. Cheah's major research foci are in the following areas: Understanding genes, their regulation and function with emphasis on development and in particular: (1) pattern formation in the mouse embryo, chondrogenesis and development of the inner ear and heart; and (2) genes encoding extracellular matrix molecules (e.g. collagens), transcription factors (e.g. SOX proteins) and signaling molecules (BMPs, hedgehogs); Bioinformatic approaches for the identification of regulatory sequences in the genome; The genetic and molecular basis of inherited and degenerative skeletal disorders; The identification of genetic modifiers of congenital heart malformations; and Genotype-phenotype relationships.

Fanny M.C. Cheung
The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Professor Cheung is currently Choh-Ming Li Professor of Psychology and Director of the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies at CUHK. She joined CUHK in 1977 and was formerly Dean of the Faculty of Social Science and Chairperson of the Department of Psychology. Professor Cheung was appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research in 2013. As Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research, Professor Cheung is the Chairperson of the Research Committee and she also oversees knowledge transfer at CUHK. An active advocate for promoting women’s status through scientific research, Professor Cheung established the Gender Research Centre in 1985, and initiated the Gender Studies Programme at the University. Over the years her efforts have led to an increased awareness of gender issues in academia as well as the community at large. From 1996 to 1999, Professor Cheung served as the Founding Chairperson of the Hong Kong Equal Opportunities Commission, setting up the mechanism to eliminate discrimination and promote equal opportunities for women and men, and for people with disabilities.

Professor Cheung obtained her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley, and PhD in Psychology from the University of Minnesota. Her research expertise lies in cross-cultural personality assessment and psychopathology, gender equality, and women leadership. Professor Cheung is the Past President of the International Test Commission, a Fellow and former President of the Hong Kong Psychological Society, and a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (APA) as well as the Association for Psychological Science (APS). Professor Cheung is dedicated to public service and has served on many government committees and advisory bodies, including the Electoral Affairs Commission, the Women’s Commission, the Independent Police Complaints Council, the Regional Council, and the Advisory Committee on Social Work Training and Manpower Planning. She was invited as a special delegate to the 7th to the 11th Sessions of the National Congress of Chinese Women. In recognition of her contributions to the community, she was appointed Justice of the Peace in 1988 and a Hong Kong Affairs Advisor from 1995 to 1997. She was made an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1997.

Professor Cheung has published and lectured widely and internationally. Her academic publications total over 180 internationally refereed journal articles, book chapters, books and monographs. Her academic honours and awards include the IAAP Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award 2014, APA Award for Distinguished Contributions to the International Advancement of Psychology 2012, Distinguished International Psychologist Award of APA Division 52 (2005), and Distinguished Leadership Award for Internationals from the University of Minnesota (2003).

Arthur B. Ellis
City University of Hong Kong

Term: 2016 - 2017

Prior to joining CityU, Professor Ellis was Distinguished Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry and Vice Chancellor for Research at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). During his tenure at UCSD from 2006 to 2010, he strengthened the campus's infrastructure for research and helped increase extramural funding by approximately 40%, to more than US$1 billion annually. Professor Ellis helped launch campus-wide initiatives in sustainability and stem cell research. He led the campus’s strategic planning exercise for research cyber-infrastructure (RCI) and co-organized a University of California-wide RCI initiative.

From 2002-2006, Professor Ellis served as the director of the Division of Chemistry at the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). While at NSF, Professor Ellis and his colleagues developed programs to better integrate education and research and to promote bilateral international collaborations. He received a NSF Director’s Meritorious Service Award for his work as a division director.

Before joining NSF, Professor Ellis was Meloche-Bascom Professor of Chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. At Madison, Professor Ellis taught thousands of undergraduates, and mentored more than 50 Ph.D. students. He and his co-workers published approximately 200 research papers. Professor Ellis received one of the inaugural NSF Director’s Distinguished Teaching Scholar Awards for his contributions to teaching and research.

Professor Ellis received his PhD degree in chemistry in 1977 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his BS degree in chemistry in 1973 from the California Institute of Technology.

Barry Halliwell
National University of Singapore

Professor Barry Halliwell is Deputy President (Research and Technology) at the National University of Singapore and is responsible for driving the University's research agenda He is involved in planning and establishing research institutes, centres and programs as well as in helping to formulate policies and agreements relating to intellectual property rights. He oversees the NUS research institutes and centres, the NUS Institutional Review Board (IRB) and NUS Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC) and enforcement of the NUS Research Integrity Code. His responsibilities also include overseeing the expansion and allocation of research funding and liaison with granting bodies.

Professor Halliwell graduated from the University of Oxford with BA (1st class) and D.Phil degrees. He holds a D.Sc degree from the University of London. He was a faculty member with the University of London, King’s College from 1974 to 2000 and held a prestigious Lister Institute Research fellowship. From 1995 to 1999, he was a Visiting Research Professor of Internal Medicine and Biochemistry with the University of California, School of Medicine, Divisions of Cardiology and Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine. Professor Halliwell was a Visiting Professor of Biochemistry to NUS from 1998 to 2000. He was Head of the University’s Department of Biochemistry from 2003 to 2007 and was Deputy Director, Office of Life Sciences from 2001 to 2005. From 2003 to September 2008, he was Executive Director of the NUS Graduate School of Integrative Sciences and Engineering.

An internationally-acclaimed biochemist, Professor Halliwell is known especially for his seminal work on the role of free radicals and antioxidants in biological systems. The Thomson Reuters lists Professor Halliwell as one of the world’s most highly-cited researchers in Neurobiology & Behaviour, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Biology and Biochemistry and his Hirsch Index is 140. His book Free Radicals in Biology and Medicine published by Oxford University Press, and now in its fourth edition, is regarded worldwide as the authoritative text in the field.

Professor Halliwell was awarded the Public Administration Medal (Silver) in 2010 by the President of Singapore for contributions to Singapore and awarded the President’s Science and Technology Medal 2013 by the President of Singapore "for distinguished sustained and exceptional contributions to Singapore’s Science and Engineering landscape". He was awarded the "Lifetime Achievement Award" by the Society for Free Radical Biology and Medicine in the USA for overall sustained excellence in the field. He was recently awarded the Ken Bowman Research Award for outstanding achievements in the field of cardiovascular research from the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences (Canada) and NUS University Award – Outstanding Researcher Award. His laboratory is also ranked number one worldwide by highest citation score in Free Radical Research.

His research focuses on the role of free radicals and antioxidants in human disease, particularly Alzheimer disease and other brain disorders, such as strokes, and in the ageing process. His interest in identifying the most important antioxidants in the human diet and in developing novel antioxidants has critical bearing on treating human diseases and understanding how diet might cause or prevent them.

Professor Halliwell is a member of several editorial boards including FEBS Letters, Biochemical Journal and Antioxidants and Redox Signaling. He has been a lead speaker at Gordon Conferences and other prestigious events worldwide and is a member of several expert advisory panels to leading universities, companies and government agencies.

Nancy Ip
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

Term: 2016 - Present

Prof. Nancy Y. Ip is currently the Dean of Science, Chair Professor of the Division of Life Science, and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Molecular Neuroscience at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). She received her PhD degree in Pharmacology from Harvard Medical School, and was Senior Staff Scientist at Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc., New York. Since joining HKUST in 1993, she has served as Associate Dean of Science (1998-2005), Director of the Biotechnology Research Institute (1996-2008), and Head of Biochemistry Department (2000-2009).

Prof. Ip is a world renowned neuroscientist and has outstanding achievements in molecular and cellular neuroscience. She is well known for her discoveries in the biology of neurotrophic factors, which are proteins that promote the survival, development and maintenance of neurons in the nervous system. She is also world-renowned for her work in elucidating the molecular signaling mechanisms at synapses, where nerve cells communicate. Given the association of synaptic dysfunction with the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases, her findings provide important clues for the development of therapeutics for these disorders.

As a highly accomplished researcher, Prof. Ip has published over 210 scientific papers in prominent reputable journals with more than 14,000 SCI citations and holds 21 patents. She has received numerous awards and honors, including the Knight of l'Ordre National du Mérite (2011), Honors for Women Innovators at the APEC Women and Economy Summit (2011), the L'OREAL-UNESCO "For Women in Science" Award, making her the first honoree in life sciences from China (2004), and the National Natural Science Award, China's highest honor in the natural sciences (2012 & 2003). She was elected Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the highest academic honor bestowed on Chinese scientists (2001), a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (2004), and Councilor for two leading organizations for neuroscience and psychopharmacology: Society for Neuroscience and Collequim Internationale Neuro- Psychopharmacologicum (2010).

Jian Lu
The City University of Hong Kong

Prof. Jian Lu commenced his undergraduate education in 1978 at Peking University where he was selected for a national scholarship for overseas study in 1979. He obtained the Dip. Ing., Master(DEA) degree and Doctoral degree from University of Technology of Compiegne in 1984 and 1986 respectively. He received the Diploma of Habilitation from the UPMC (Paris VI) in 1993. From 1986 to 1994, he was appointed as Senior Research Engineer at the CETIM (French Technical Centre for Mechanical Industry). In 1994, he was appointed as Professor (1994-2005); Head of Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering (1994-2004) and Director of Mechanical Systems and Concurrent Engineering Laboratory (1994-2005) jointly supported by the French Ministry of Education and CNRS at the University of Technology of Troyes, France. From 2005 to 2010, he was Chair Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He has been appointed as Chair Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Dean of College of Science and Engineering at City University of Hong Kong since September 2010.

His research interests are: Mechanical characterization and processing of nanomaterials and advanced structural materials, experimental mechanics and residual stress. He is a Member of Editorial Board of the Journal of Strain Analysis for Engineering Design, International Journal of Mechanics and Materials in Design, ACTA MECHINICA Sinica and ACTA MECHINICA Solida Sinica, Mechanics and Industry, CMC: Computers, Materials, & Continua, Theoretical & Applied Mechanics Letter. He served as an Associate Technical Editor of Experimental Mechanics (International Journal of Society for Experimental Mechanics (SEM), USA, 1998-2001). He is an Overseas Assessor of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Member of International Advisory Committee of the Shenyang National Laboratory for Material Sciences. He was Knighted (Chevalier de l'Ordre National du Mérite) by France in 2006. He was elected as a Fellow of the Society for Experimental Mechanics (USA) in 2010 and as a Fellow of the National Academy of Technology of France in 2011.

Peter Mathieson
The University of Hong Kong

Professor Peter Mathieson is the fifteenth President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong, and assumed office in April 2014.

Peter Mathieson was born and educated in the United Kingdom. He attended a state grammar school in Penzance, Cornwall, becoming Head Boy in 1977. He was awarded an unconditional offer of a place to read Medicine at the London Hospital Medical College in 1978 and qualified from the University of London with First Class Honours in 1983. After junior medical posts in London, he obtained a research training fellowship from the Medical Research Council (MRC) to study at the University of Cambridge. He was awarded a PhD by the University of Cambridge in 1992. He then became Director of Studies for Clinical Medicine at Christ’s College, Cambridge. After a further MRC fellowship he moved to Bristol in 1995 as the foundation Professor of Renal Medicine at the University of Bristol and Honorary Consultant Nephrologist, North Bristol NHS Trust.

Peter was elected Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 1999. Between 2003 and 2007 he chaired the Research Grants Committee of Kidney Research UK. He was a member of the Renal Association Clinical Trials committee from 1996 to 2007 and Chairman between 2000 and 2003. In 2007 he was elected as President of the Renal Association (the youngest in its history) in a competitive election by the membership and also became Head of the University Department of Clinical Science at North Bristol. In the same year he was appointed as Director of Research & Development for the North Bristol NHS Trust. He served the full three year term as President of the Renal Association and remained a Trustee for a further two years as Immediate Past-President.

In 2008 Peter was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Bristol. Following the formation of Bristol Health Partners, Peter was appointed as the founding Director in May 2012, a role which he undertook alongside the role of Dean.

Alfonso Ngan
The University of Hong Kong

Term: 2016 - Present

Professor Alfonso Ngan Hing Wan is Professor of Materials Science at the University of Hong Kong. He is a leading authority on deformation mechanisms of materials. He has performed pioneer work on viscoelastic effects in nanoindentation, and statistical theories for deformation of micro-crystals and materials with random microstructures. He is the only Chinese scientist so far to have received the prestigious Rosenhain Medal of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, and he holds a Higher Doctorate (DSc) from the University of Birmingham (2009/2010).

Paul Tam
The University of Hong Kong

Term: 2016 - Present

Professor Paul Tam graduated from the Medical School of The University of Hong Kong in 1976. He received his training and spent his early career years in the Department of Surgery of the University until 1986. He was Senior Lecturer at the University of Liverpool from 1986 to 1990, and Reader and Director of Paediatric Surgery at the University of Oxford from 1990 to 1996. He has been Chair of Paediatric Surgery at The University of Hong Kong since 1996.

Professor Tam has contributed to advances in paediatric surgery especially in the areas of minimal invasive surgery, Hirschsprung’s disease and hepatobiliary diseases such as biliary atresia. He also leads a large research team in genomics and stem cell biology. He has published 319 articles in internationally refereed journals and 30 book chapters, and is ranked amongst the top 1% of most-cited scientists in Essential Science Indicators.

As Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) and Dean of Graduate School, Professor Tam steers research strategies and development of the University of Hong Kong. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTPC) and member of the Research Grants Council, University Grants Committee of Hong Kong. Also, he serves on many international professional associations and was President of the Pacific Association of Paediatric Surgeons (2008-2009). He is currently Associate Editor of the Journal of Pediatric Surgery.

Professor Tam has given keynote lectures, including the Journal of Pediatric Surgery Lecture and the Suruga Lecture, at many international conferences. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the British Association of Pediatric Surgery Prize (1984), and most recently the International Outstanding Leadership Award in Endoscopy from the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China (2010).

Benjamin Wah
The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Term: 2016 - Present

Professor Benjamin Wah was the Franklin W. Woeltge Endowed Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and is a prominent computer scientist, with expertise in non-linear programming, multimedia signal processing and artificial intelligence. He is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and has served as the President of IEEE Computer Society. Professor Wah has received numerous international honours and awards for his distinguished academic and professional achievements. Among these are the Distinguished Alumni Award in Computer Science of the University of California, Berkeley, the W. Wallace McDowell Award, the Tsutomu Kanai Award and the Richard E. Merwin Distinguished Service Award of the IEEE Computer Society.

In 1998-99, Professor Wah was Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at CUHK, and in that year received an Exemplary Teaching Award. His bonds with the University continued afterwards as he served in the capacity of Adjunct Professor in the Department from 1999 to 2003.

Professor Wah has also long been committed to enhancing the development of higher education and research in Hong Kong. He was a member of the Research Grants Council of the University Grants Committee in Hong Kong between 2005 and 2009, and served as the Chairman of its Engineering Panel between 2006 and 2009.

Born and brought up in Hong Kong, Professor Wah graduated from Queen Elizabeth School and pursued further studies in the US. He received his BS and MS in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Columbia University, and his MS in Computer Science and PhD in Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. He began teaching in Purdue University in 1979, and later joined the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1985. He also served as Director of the Advanced Digital Sciences Centre established by the University of Illinois in Singapore in 2009, with funding from the Singapore government's Agency for Science, Technology and Research.

Henry Wong
The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Term: 2016 - Present

Professor Henry N.C. Wong is currently Head of New Asia College, Dean of Science and Professor of Chemistry. He obtained his B.Sc. degree with first class honours from CUHK in 1973, and was subsequently awarded a Shell Scholarship for Postgraduate Studies in the United Kingdom. He furthered his studies at University College London where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1976. After two postdoctoral research years at Harvard University, Professor Wong returned to University College London to begin his independent research undertaking as Ramsay Memorial Fellow. From 1980 to 1982, Professor Wong did research at the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, The Chinese Academy of Sciences. He returned to CUHK in 1983 and was the Chairman of the Department of Chemistry from 1995 to 1997, and the Senate Committee on Student Discipline from 1997 to 2002. Professor Wong was Head of New Asia College of CUHK from 2002 to July 2010 and was Pro-Vice-Chancellor/Vice-President from 2009 to 2013. He chaired the Research Committee from 2004 to 2013 and the Academic Equipment Grant Committee from 2006 to 2013 respectively.

Professor Wong’s research interests are concerned with the syntheses and studies of natural and non-natural molecules. He serves on the editorial boards of several international and national journals. He received the degree of Doctor of Science from the University of London in 1994. Professor Wong has also been actively contributing to the research and scientific development on the mainland. He is Chairman of the Management Committee, Shanghai-Hong Kong Joint Laboratory in Chemical Synthesis, Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, The Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is also an honorary professor and guest professor of many tertiary institutions in Mainland China. Professor Wong has received many prestigious awards over the years. He won the 2nd Class State Natural Science Award of China in 1997. He was a Croucher Senior Research Fellow in 1999-2000 and was elected to The Chinese Academy of Sciences and The World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries (TWAS) (formerly known as The Third World Academy of Sciences) in 1999 and 2004, respectively.

Vivian Wing-Wah Yam
The University of Hong Kong

Professor Vivian W.W. Yam obtained her BSc with First Class Honours and PhD both from The University of Hong Kong. After two years on the faculty at the City Polytechnic of Hong Kong (now City University of Hong Kong), she moved to The University of Hong Kong in 1990, rising through the academic ranks of Senior Lecturer (1995), Professor (1997) and Chair Professor (1999). She was Head of Chemistry for 6 years from 2000 to 2005, and became the Philip Wong Wilson Wong Professor in Chemistry and Energy in 2009 at The University of Hong Kong. She was elected to Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2001 at the age of 38 as the youngest member of the Academy, Foreign Associate of the US National Academy of Sciences in 2012, Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries (TWAS) in 2006, and very recently in 2015 Foreign Member of Academia Europaea and Founding Member of the Academy of Sciences of Hong Kong. She was the Laureate of the 2011 L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Award and recipient of the 2005/06 Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Centenary Medal, 2015 RSC Ludwig Mond Award, 2005 State Natural Science Award, 2006 Japanese Photochemistry Association Eikohsha Award, 2014 Chinese Chemical Society-China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) Chemistry Contribution Prize, Docteur Honoris Causa (Université de Rennes 1, 2013), 2013 Seaborg Lectureship (UC Berkeley), 2015/16 Julia S. and Edward C. Lee Memorial Lectureship (Lee Lectureship) (University of Chicago), 2011 Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress, 2007 Hong Kong Fulbright Distinguished Scholar, 2000-01 Croucher Foundation Senior Research Fellowship, 2002 Ten Outstanding Young Persons of Hong Kong and 2008 Hong Kong Outstanding Women Professionals and Entrepreneurs Award.

Professor Yam serves as the Associate Editor of the SCI journal, Inorganic Chemistry, published by the American Chemical Society. She also serves on the International Editorial Advisory Board of major SCI journals, such as Accounts of Chemical Research, Journal of the American Chemical Society, Angewandte Chemie, Chemical Science, ACS Nano, Chemistry of Materials and Editorial Board of Coordination Chemistry Reviews, Journal of the Photochemistry and Photobiology C: Photochemistry Reviews and many others. Professor Yam’s major research interests are in the areas of inorganic and organometallic chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, photochemistry, molecular functional materials for sensing, organic optoelectronics, memories and solar energy research.

Kenneth Young
The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Kenneth Young obtained his BS (Physics, 1969) and PhD (Physics & Mathematics, 1972) from Caltech, where he held the Richard P Feynman Fellowship during his doctoral studies. He worked as a postdoc at Princeton and in 1973 joined The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), where he is now professor of physics.

Young’s research interest includes elementary particles, field theory, high energy phenomenology, dissipative systems and especially their eigenfunction representation and application to optics, gravitational waves and other open systems. Publications have appeared in Rev Mod Phys, Phys Rev Lett, Phys Rev etc. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society.

Young has served as a member of the Hong Kong University Grants Committee and chair of its Research Grants Council. He is a trustee of the Croucher Foundation in Hong Kong; and a member of the Shaw Prize Council and vice-chair of its Board of Adjudicators. He is chair of the Radiological protection Advisory Committee of the Hong Kong Government and a director of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation.

Professor Albert Yu is a renowned neuroscientist and bio-entrepreneur who has devoted over two decades in neuroscience and infectious disease research and had significant contributions to molecular neurobiology and molecular diagnosis. Professor Yu is the Vice-Director of the Neuroscience Research Institute, Professor of the Department of Neurobiology and also a Professor at the Infectious Disease Center at Peking University. He is also the Chairman and CEO of Hai Kang Life Corporation Limited (HKLife), a Hong Kong-based biotechnology company with operations in Hong Kong and Beijing and is specialized in the R&D and commercialization of clinical and veterinary molecular diagnostics, as well as various cutting-edge food testing technologies and their optimization into user-friendly, cost-effective mobile field units (MFUs). HKLife’s core technology, EFADchip, has been recognized as a globally leading technology which will overcome bottlenecks in existing lab-on-a-chip technologies and is expected to revolutionize modern clinical diagnosis. The technology has been awarded the prestigious 2009 Asia Pacific Frost & Sullivan Product Differentiation Excellence Award for In-Vitro Diagnostics.

Under the leadership of Prof. Albert Yu, HKLife has also been fast and accurate in responding to global infectious disease outbreaks such as avian influenza, SARS, and the recent H1N1 influenza outbreak. The technology in avian influenza diagnosis has been awarded the 2004 Hong Kong Award for Industry - Technological Achievement, was recognized as Chinese National Standards, and is being recommended by FAO/OIE in its Manual of Diagnostic Tests and Vaccines for Terrestrial Animals. It is the first and only product being approved by the Japan Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (JMAFF). In recognition of his expertise, Prof. Yu has been invited by various industrial and academic organizations (e.g. WHO, US Air Force) to introduce the technological advances introduced by HKLife.

Prof. Yu received his BSc, MSc and PhD from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada and spent subsequent years in the Canada, United States, Hong Kong, and China. Prof. Yu’s broad cross-cultural experience base and active involvement in both the academic and business environment has led to the strategic vision behind the success of the HKLife team. Also, with a global network and an expanding base of established contacts in China, Prof. Yu has been an important facilitator of dialogue regarding the development of biotechnology in Asia. Over his professional and entrepreneurial career, Prof. Yu has published several books and over 200 peer-reviewed scientific articles and conference papers. He is also the co-inventor of numerous technologies with patents granted in major countries.
