Conference Description
The Stochastic Physics in Biology GRS provides a unique forum for young doctoral and post-doctoral researchers to present their work, discuss new methods, cutting edge ideas, and pre-published data, as well as to build collaborative relationships with their peers. Experienced mentors and trainee moderators will facilitate active participation in scientific discussion to allow all attendees to be engaged participants rather than spectators.
Biological processes are influenced by stochasticity at all scales, and understanding how microscopic processes affect macroscopic phenomena is of paramount importance: how do thermodynamic fluctuations influence a cell’s phenotype? What impact do variations at the cell or individual level have on population or ecological dynamics? How does stochasticity in the expression of single genes dictate pattern formation in tissues? Understanding these problems requires bringing together scientists with different backgrounds and perspectives, and who use a combination of theoretical and experimental approaches. This often leads people from different subfields to use different “languages” to talk about similar concepts. By gaining an appreciation for a variety of approaches that could be used to tackle a given biological question, junior researchers can learn how to communicate beyond their area of expertise, enabling them to drive progress across disciplinary boundaries.
