This network is patterned by intricate developmental signals, maintained and modulated throughout life by local and systemic cues and is corrupted by numerous diseases and during aging. Thanks to modern and classical approaches, the heterogeneity in structure, function and metabolism of endothelial cells across vascular beds is being progressively revealed.
