The Water and Aqueous Solutions GRC is a premier, international scientific conference focused on advancing the frontiers of science through the presentation of cutting-edge and unpublished research, prioritizing time for discussion after each talk and fostering informal interactions among scientists of all career stages. The conference program includes a diverse range of speakers and discussion leaders from institutions and organizations worldwide, concentrating on the latest developments in the field. The conference is five days long and held in a remote location to increase the sense of camaraderie and create scientific communities, with lasting collaborations and friendships. In addition to premier talks, the conference has designated time for poster sessions from individuals of all career stages, and afternoon free time and communal meals allow for informal networking opportunities with leaders in the field.
Water plays a key role in most sustainability goals. There is a close link between water and energy: Water is essential for energy production: in fossil fuel extraction, electricity generation, cooling thermal and nuclear power plants, hydropower, and biofuel production. Globally, the energy sector consumes 10% of currently available freshwater. Conversely, energy is crucial for water purification, pumping, distribution, wastewater treatment, and seawater desalination. In 2014, 4% of global electricity generation and 3% of global oil production were consumed in the water sector. The challenge is to reduce the energy intensity of the water sector and the water consumption of the energy sector through scientific and technological breakthroughs. Radical new concepts are needed, made possible by recent developments in nanotechnologies and nanomaterials, along with the discovery of new properties of matter, especially water, at the nanoscale.
This year's Water & Aqueous Solutions GRC emphasizes the water-energy nexus, covering a broad range of demographics, the conference and seminar aim to offer valuable insights for all attendees on topics from water dynamics to desalination and renewable energy, fostering innovative solutions at the intersection of water and energy.
A session dedicated to selected poster talks will give young investigators a chance to present their work. Early career investigators are encouraged to apply for the Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) for career development and scientific sharing.
